Buying a Used Car in Nanaimo: What to Know

Dealer protection

BC dealers and salespeople must be licensed by the Vehicle Sales Authority (VSA), and dealers must disclose key history such as prior major damage or past use as a taxi or rental.

Registration and inspection

Cars already registered in BC don't need a safety inspection to change hands, but vehicles from outside BC must pass one before ICBC will register them. Transfers are done through an Autoplan broker.

Sales tax

Dealer purchases carry 5% GST plus PST, which starts at 7% and rises for higher-priced vehicles. Private sales are charged PST when you register the vehicle with ICBC.
