Buying a Used Car in Mississauga: What to Know

Many Mississauga sellers commute on the 401, 403 and 407, so higher-kilometre highway cars are common here and often cost less than their mileage suggests. Highway kilometres are usually easier on a car than stop-and-go city driving, but ask for service records that show regular oil changes and brake work. Check the UVIP for the car's ownership history and any liens, and get a Safety Standards Certificate before you register it.

Ontario dealers must be registered with OMVIC, which backs buyers with a compensation fund. Advertised dealer prices must be all-in, including every fee except HST and licensing.

Registration and inspection

You need a Safety Standards Certificate to plate a used car in Ontario. Private sellers must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) showing ownership and lien history.

Sales tax

Dealer purchases carry 13% HST. On a private sale you pay 13% retail sales tax at ServiceOntario, based on the purchase price or the vehicle's wholesale value, whichever is higher.
