Buying a Used Car in Gatineau: What to Know

Dealer protection

Quebec dealers are licensed by the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). The Consumer Protection Act gives dealer-sold used cars a legal warranty based on the vehicle's age and mileage.

Registration and inspection

Ownership is transferred at the SAAQ. Most used cars don't need a mechanical inspection, but rebuilt vehicles and some out-of-province imports do.

Sales tax

Dealer purchases carry 5% GST plus 9.975% QST. Private sales are charged QST when the SAAQ registers the transfer.
