Buying a Used Car in Edmonton: What to Know

Edmonton winters are hard on batteries, starters and cooling systems, so ask whether the car has a working block heater and when the battery was last replaced. Work trucks with high kilometres are common here, so check the service history and look for wear from heavy towing, such as a worn hitch or transmission that shifts roughly. If the car was last registered outside Alberta, it needs an out-of-province inspection before you can register it.

Dealer protection

Alberta dealers and salespeople must be licensed by AMVIC. Dealers must give you a Mechanical Fitness Assessment for any used vehicle they sell.

Registration and inspection

Vehicles already registered in Alberta don't need a safety inspection to be sold. Vehicles from another province need an Out-of-Province inspection before a registry agent will register them.
