Buying a Used Car in Hamilton: What to Know

Hamilton shoppers often compare prices with Burlington, Oakville and the Niagara region, so it's worth widening your search radius. Lake-effect snow and heavily salted roads make rust the main thing to check here, especially on wheel arches, rocker panels and brake lines. If a car is sold without a Safety Standards Certificate, factor the cost of passing one into your offer, since you'll need it to put the car on the road.

Dealer protection

Ontario dealers must be registered with OMVIC, which backs buyers with a compensation fund. Advertised dealer prices must be all-in, including every fee except HST and licensing.

Registration and inspection

You need a Safety Standards Certificate to plate a used car in Ontario. Private sellers must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) showing ownership and lien history.

Sales tax

Dealer purchases carry 13% HST. On a private sale you pay 13% retail sales tax at ServiceOntario, based on the purchase price or the vehicle's wholesale value, whichever is higher.
